Chipmunks In My Garden

Had a great time today photographing chipmunks in my garden.

The first one climbed on to the head of my largest gnome for this photo op!

The second managed to find his way past my animal baffle and get onto my bird feeder.

These little guys are very crafty and clever.

We have also managed to get them to eat out of our hands so they can be quite trusting over time.

My bird feeders attract a lot of animals including mink, raccoons, foxes and more.

If you're  interested, you can see these Canadian Animals in My Garden.

I hope you enjoyed these photographs of Chipmunks in my garden.

New Hiking Trail in the Rouge Park

Canadian Maple Leaf flag with an Eastern Kingbird
Found a new hiking trail in the Rouge Park today and had a great time enjoying the Fall colours.

Living in Toronto, Canada, we are blessed with the beautiful maple tree.

The red maple leaf is the symbol of Canada on our national flag

At this time of year, the distinctive green leaves of the Maple tree turn a glorious bright red.

Salmon swimming up the Rouge River
We were thrilled to see salmon swimming up the river, and some interesting fungi growing on tree stumps.

The Rouge Park has just been designated as Canada's first urban National Park and is 13 times larger than New York's Central Park. To learn more about this exciting new park, visit rougepark.com

How To Attract Birds To Your Garden

I love to watch Canadian birds in my garden. This article will show you how to attract birds to your garden.

There are three key elements needed to attract birds to your garden:
  1. Bird feeders: Set up a variety of different feeders to cater to different types of birds. For example, different types of feeders are used to supply peanuts (for Woodpeckers, Nuthatches & Blue Jays), suet (for Woodpeckers), Niger seed (for Goldfinches), millet and sunflower seed (for other finches, cardinals etc) and nectar (sugar-water) feeders for hummingbirds.
  2. Perches and Shelter: Plant shrubs and small trees to provide protection and places to perch near the feeders.
  3. Source of Water: Set up a bird bath, fountain or small pond to provide fresh water.

I have set up various bird feeders throughout my backyard, with a fountain and a good selection of shrubs and flowering plants. Here are some of the Canadian birds that are attracted to my garden:

Female Cardinal

American Goldfinches

Blue Jay

Ruby-Throated Hummingbird

Rose-Breasted Grosbeak

Hairy Woodpecker
